“I like when my mom reads the Harry Potter books.
I like to think about the background and what the characters look like. I think reading books is a good thing, because I learn. And it is fun. If I met a kid who had never read a book, I would say that he should try. It is hard to learn how to read, but when I read a book, I feel happy and proud, but sometimes tired. Books make me feel like I am flying inside my head.”
(Bennett Stolz – 7yrs)

“I love reading because it not only improves my
vocabulary, it allows me to meet new and interesting people. If I couldn't read, knowing what it means to me now, I don’t think I would be able to survive. I also think that because reading is my source of energy, it makes me very happy. It’s fun to be the hero or heroine in your books and try to figure out the plot before the author reveals it to you. You get so many things out of reading: a great vocabulary, you learn how to spell, you have fun, and it develops your imagination.

If I met a child who didn't have books, I would try to help her by writing out the alphabet and sounding out each letter. Then I would begin teaching her small words until she was able to read on her own.”
(Charlotte Hill – 9yrs)
“I love reading, because I become not just a girl
reading in her room, but a traveler to great and interesting places. Reading is also basic for good grades. If you read books, you can go anywhere, you can know anybody, and you can be anything.

If I knew of a child in Nigeria who didn't have books, I would mail some to her. If I couldn't go myself, I would try to find someone who could help her to read, beginning with the alphabet then moving on to bigger and bigger words. It would be best if the person teaching her spoke both English and her native language.
(Miranda Hill – 9yrs)

“I love books, both old and new. I love meeting new
characters and sharing their adventures. I read about twenty books a day. I would like to share my books with other children.”
(Kyra Gilmore – 4yrs)
“Books are entertaining and a good way to spend
your time. If I were to interest someone my age in reading, I would suggest they begin with Tolkein's Lord of the Rings. It would be nice if children all over the world could have the same opportunity as I have had to read.

If I met someone who didn't have books, I would lend him some of mine, and then I would raise money so that he would be able to buy his own books.”
(Ryan Stolz – 10yrs)

“Books take you on wonderful adventures and it is
exciting to discover what will happen next. I hope that children everywhere can learn to read.

If I met someone who didn't have books, I would try to give him money to buy some or share the books that I have. I would also give away books that I had outgrown.”
(Terence Gilmore – 8yrs)
